Abstract
PURPOSE: To improve the shape control ability of a rolled material in rolling by a composite roll by constituting said roll of composite layers consisting of an outside shell layer having different thicknesses, an intermediate layer and a core material on the inner side thereof in producing said roll by centrifugal casting.
CONSTITUTION: In producing a composite roll for rolling by a centrifugal casting method, a circumferentially projecting part 6 is provided on the outside circumferential surfaces of barrel part chillers 1, 1' of a mold, and an outside shell layer 4 of nonuniform wall thucknesses such as A, B owing to a difference in cooling rates by a difference in the wall thicknesses of the chillers is solidified and formed, after which the rotation of the mold is stopped and the mold is erected. After the unsolidified melt 7 in the layer 4 is discharged, the molten metal of a core material is cast in the space thereof, whereby a composite roll is made. Or while the rotation of the mold is continued at the point of the time when the layer 4 is formed, part of the molten metal of an intermediate component between the layer 4 and the core material 7 or part of the molten metal of the material 7 is cast on the inner side of the layer 4 and is mixed with the melt 5, whereby a mixed intermediate layer 8 is formed on the inside surface of the layer 4 and further the core material 7 is cast.
