Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a flame-retarding phenol resin useful to impart flame retardancy to laminated sheets, by reacting bromine with a varnish prepared by reacting a vegetable oil or its derivative with a phenol or a formaldehyde in the presence of a basic catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A vegetable oil, its derivative or a reaction product derived by reacting a phenol therewith is reacted with a phenol or a formaldehyde in the presence of a basic catalyst. The reaction product is further reacted with bromine. After this reaction, a phosphorus or nitrogen flame retardant or an inorganic compound such as an antimony compound is added to or reacted with the product and dissolved in an organic solvent to obtain a varnish for laminate sheets. In this process, since bromine is reacted as such and, as different from the case of other organic flame retardants, no other elements but bromine are bonded, it is possible to obtain a flame-retarding resin having the lowest volume per Br atom. Moreover, bromine is taken in the resin by its reactivity to form the most effective flame retardant.
