PURPOSE:To maintain the thickness of aluminum plates at the outlet side at a fixed value and to improve the accuracy in the thickness, by modifying the rolling opening in response to variations in the operating condition of brush rolls. CONSTITUTION:An arithmetic device 8 detects operating conditions of brush rolls 5, and operates a reduction position modifying amount DELTAS0 based on the equation, and then, sends the operation result to a reduction position control device 7 and modifies a rolling opening S. In the equation for calculating rolling opening modifying amount DELTAS0, M: a mill constant, P: a rolling load, S: a rolling opening, m: a coefficient of plasticity of material to be rolled, mu: a coefficient of friction between material to be rolled and rolling roll, (deltaP)/(deltamu): a partial differential coefficient, and DELTAmu: the difference in a coefficient of friction when the brush rolls contact with the material to be rolled and that when do not contact.
