Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a friction material exhibiting excellent friction characteristics and wear resistance at an elevated temperature and having good mechanical strength, by blending a fiber obtd. from an arom. polyamide having a specified structural unit. CONSTITUTION:A short fiber having a fiber length of 100mm. or shorter and a single yarn size of 0.5-15d is used which is obtd. by subjecting at least one member selected from an arom. polyetheramide, an arom. polysulfide, an arom. polyamine amide and copolymers thereof to spinning, pref. dry jet wet-process spinning, and then hot stretching the resulting fiber at least twice as long at 250-600 deg.C. 10-80wt% above short fiber, 1-40wt% friction modifier such as alumina, and 10-40wt% thermosetting resin such as a phenolic resin are blended together. The mixture is molded into a required shape and then cured by heating to obtain a friction material.
