Abstract

PURPOSE: To shorten the production time, facilitate drying and grinding and obtain a solid urea resin useful as a plasticizer for producing urea resin molding materials, by adding calcined gypsum to a syrup obtained from urea and an aldehyde and cooling the mixture.
CONSTITUTION: Urea is reacted with an aldehyde while the water content of the reaction system is maintained at 13W25wt%. The produced resin syrup is mixed with calcined gypsum and cooled to separate a solid urea resin. The reason why the separation of the solid urea is promoted by adding calcined gypsum to the resin syrup is considered to be that methylolated urea such as dimethylolurea can be rapidly separated because addition of calcined gypsum reduces the free- water content of the system. Moreover, the improved grindability of the solid resin is obtained by the following reasons: the solid urea resin containing gypsum has a lower free-water content than a solid urea resin containing no gypsum, and the lumps can be easily ground because of conversion of calcined gypsum into gypsum.
