Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce the titled emulsion capable of forming films having excellent resistance to water, heat, weather, etc., by subjecting a radical-polymerizable monomer to an aqueous emulsion polymerization with the aid of a high-molecular emulsifier consisting of a specified vinyl copolymer.
CONSTITUTION: A vinyl copolymer of weight-average MW about 500W150,000 (high-molecular emulsifier) is formed by polymerizing 0.5W50wt% cyclic unsaturated compound-containing (meth)acrylate ester of formulaI, wherein R1 is H or CH3, R2 is a group of formula II, III or IV, in which R3 is H or CH3, 5W 50wt% α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid, e.g., acrylic acid and 0W94.5wt% other vinyl monomers, e.g., butyl acrylate. In the aqueous emulsion polymerization of a radical-polymerizable monomer, e.g., α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid alkyl ester or an alkenylbenzene, the above-produced emulsifier is used preferably in an amount of about 0.05W1 time the weight of the monomer.
