Abstract
PURPOSE: To stop a polymerization reaction effectively at the time of abnormal operation, by rapidly dispersing a polymerization inhibitor into the reaction system by charging the polymerization inhibitor into the reaction system and intermittently vaporizing and boiling the monomer.
CONSTITUTION: When something unusual such as a power failure or an agitator trouble happens in the course of an addition polymerization reaction, e.g., suspension polymerization or emulsion polymerization of vinyl chloride or the like, and there is a need to stop the polymerization reaction, about 0.0001W1pt.wt. (per 100pts.wt. monomer), polymerization inhibitor, e.g., hydroquinone or nitrohydroxylamine, is charged into the polymerization system and then the monomer in the polymerization system is intermittently vaporized and boiled. The intermittent vaporization and boiling of the monomer is carried out, for example, in the following way: a reactor release valve open to the atmosphere is kept open for a definite length of time to release the monomer into the atmosphere and thereby to vaporize and boil the monomer in the reaction system and then the release valve is shut. This operation is repeated several times.
