Abstract
PURPOSE:To connect optical fibers easily with high accuracy by insertably providing a spacing setting means and a mirror for joint observation in the opposite spacing of the clad-removed parts of a pair of optical fibers and below the same, respectively. CONSTITUTION:Optical fibers 9a, 9b are held slippably to holding means 5a1-5a3, 5b1-5b3, and clad-removed parts 10a, 10b are set into the grooves 7a, 7b of fixing tables 2a, 2b thence moving tables 1a, 1b are moved in arrow directions until the leading ends of the parts 10a, 10b abut on a spacing setting means 3. After the means 3 is retreated, feed is applied to the tables 1A, 1B thereby setting the parts 10a, 10b at a microspacing. Thence, a specular surface 12 having a 45 deg. angle of inclination with respect to the optical axis of a microscope 11 is inserted below the opposite parts of the parts 10a and 10b. The operator sticks the optical fibers by melting while observing the top and side surfaces thereof. Thereby, the highly accurate connection is easily accomplished.
