Abstract

PURPOSE: To easily prepare a perfectly round ceramic bead, by dropping a mixture of one or more kinds of ceramic sols into a liquid consisting of two layers with different specific gravities to prepare a bead and make the same gel.
CONSTITUTION: A ceramic sol is prepared by hydrolyzing an alkoxide of a metal such as Al, Mg or Si. The resulting sol is dropped into a two-layered liquid comprising a high b.p. liquid, prepared by adding a surfactant to 2-ethyl-1- hexanol, 2-heptanol or the like, having a specific gravity smaller than that of the sol and immiscible with water and a liquid, such as bromoform or carbon tetrachloride, having a specific gravity larger than that of the sol and smaller than a gel. The sol falls down through the upper high b.p. liquid layer to form a bead and gel. Said sol is held at an interface of the two liquids until it perfectly gels and keeps a bead form and thereafter, a gel bead precipitates through a lower liquid layer as such, which is then separated, dried and baked to prepare a small ceramic bead.
