Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove water content in an industrial lubricant effectively and easily by a method wherein an industrial lubricant to be treated is contacted to zeolite having a specified pore diameter while maintaining the oil at a specified viscosity.
CONSTITUTION: An industrial oil containing water is maintained at a viscosity of not higher than 68cSt by heating. The heating for regulating the viscosity of the lubricant is preferably conducted by an indirect heating system so as to prevent the lubricant from being deteriorated through oxidation due to localized overheating. Then, the lubricant is contacted to zeolite having a pore diameter of 3W5Å to reduce water content by adsorption. The zeolite adsorbs water in an amount of about 5W20wt% of its own weight, thus lowering the water content of the lubricant to about 0.05wt% or below and thereby enabling the oil to be reused. The zeolite used for removing water can be regenerated by washing it with an organic solvent such as ethanol sufficiently and then firing it at about 200W300°C.
