Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the efficiency of a magnetic tape subsystem, by counting the number of overruns caused by a magnetic tape driving device in the magnetic tape subsystem and correcting the maximum IBG value permitted for counting. CONSTITUTION:Overrun is detected as shown by 4 and the number of times of this overrun is counted by an overrun counter 5. On the other hand, a block counter 3 counts the number of blocks processed within a fixed time. A comparison operator 6 determines if the values of the block counter 3 and of the overrun counter 5 make the maximum permissible IBG value long or short. After the comparison operator 6 completes the operation, an IBG distance decreasing signal 14 and an IBG distance increasing signal 15 are used to change the value of an IBG distance register 8, and the IBG value can be controlled so that the efficiency of the magnetic tape subsystem is greater and the data amount given to one magnetic tape is increased.
