Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain high purity hydrogen at a low cost, by subjecting a gaseous mixture of nitrogen, methane and ethane to the cycle of compression, cooling and expansion in the deep freeze separation of coke oven gas with a plurality of heat-exchangers arranged in series.
CONSTITUTION: In the manufacturing of hydrogen by the deep freeze separation of coke oven gas 1 with a plurality of heat-exchangers 6, 14, 18, 22, 24, etc. arranged in series, a mixed gas 52 consisting of nigrogen, methane, and ethane, is compressed with a compressor 53 to ≥10 ata, and cooled to ≤-40°C with a heat exchanger 55 for mixed gas to obtain an ethane-rich liquid 63, which is used for the cooling of the coke oven gas 1. The unliquefied gas 62 rich in nitrogen of the mixed gas 52 is cooled and liquefied with the heat-exchanger 18, subjected to the heat exchange with the coke oven gas 1, mixed with the ethane- rich liquid, and returned to the compressor 53. By the use of the above mixed gas cycle, hydrogen can be obtained at low cost.
