Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a raw material of oxamide, etc., without producing by-products nor using a high-purity carbon monoxide, economically, in an industrial scale, by reacting a formic acid ester as a raw material with molecular oxygen in the presence of palladium.
CONSTITUTION: The ester of formic acid and a 1W20C alcohol selected from the group of saturated monohydric aliphatic alcohols, alicyclic alcohols, and arylalkyl alcohols, is used as the raw material, and is reacted with molecular oxyge in the presence of palladium or its salt to obtain the titled compound. The yield of the process can be further improved by the use of one or more reaction accelerators selected from (A) nitric acid and/or nitrogen dioxide, (B) salt of copper and/or iron, and (C) carbon monoxide.
