Abstract
PURPOSE: To carry out ortho alkylation of a phenolic compound with an alcohol highly selectively, by subjecting the phenolic compound and the alcohol to contact reaction in gaseous phase using a manganese oxide type catalyst having high porosity as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: In preparing an ortho alkylated phenolic compound by subjecting a phenolic compound containing at least one H at ortho position with an alcohol to contact reaction in a gaseous phase, manganese oxide having a porosity of 10W50%, preferably 20W40%, or a catalyst comprising manganese oxide as a main ingredient (obtained by adding silicon oxide, oxide of alkaline earth metal, cerium oxide, etc.) is used a catalyst.
EFFECT: The reaction can be carried out with good result for a long time stably.
