Abstract

PURPOSE: To carry out ortho alkylation of a phenolic compound with an alcohol highly selectively, by using a catalyst which is sintered by heat-treating a catalyst consisting essentially of manganese oxide at high temperature.
CONSTITUTION: In preparing an ortho alkylated phenolic compound by subjecting a phenolic compound having at least one H at ortho position with an alcohol to contact reaction in gaseous phase a catalyst which is sintered by heat-treating a catalyst comprising at least one selected from the group consisting of manganese oxide, silicon oxide, germanium oxide, and lead oxide and/or at least one selected from the group consisting of oxide of alkaline earth metal and oxide of alkali metal at preferably 800W1,500°C for 3W96hr at high temperature is used in the reaction.
EFFECT: The reaction can be carried out with good result for a long time stably.
