Abstract

PURPOSE:To secure the vertical movements of a piston by a method wherein equal air pressures are applied on the upper and the lower surfaces of a spool and either of the upper surface or the lower surface of the spool is made to communicate with the atmosphere to thereby move the spool in the vertical direction. CONSTITUTION:The oscillating and rotating apparatus comprises: a cylinder 1 including a first chamber 11 and a second chamber 12 and having air supply passages 71 and 72 and an exhaust passage 73; the spool 2 slidably housed within the first chamber 11 of the cylinder 1 and having an upper chamber 91 and a lower chamber 92; a piston gear 3 slidably arranged within the second chamber 12 of the cylinder 1 and having an upper tooth section 31 and a lower tooth section 32; and a piston rod 4 slidably and rotatably mounted on the cylinder 1 and having tooth sections 51 and 61 engaging the upper and the lower tooth sections of the piston gear 3, the mechanism of the apparatus being such that the spool 2 is moved vertically by air supplied through the passage 71 and 72 of the cylinder 1 so that the piston rod 4 is rotated as it is moved vertically. In this case, when the upper and the lower chambers 91 and 92 of the spool 2 are made to communicate with each other so as to apply the constantly equal air pressures on the upper and the lower surfaces of the spool 2, respectively, and, when the chamber 91 and 92 are so formed that they come to communicate with the exhaust gas passages 73 alternatively in correspondence with the vertical movements of the piston rod, the spool 2 is moved in the vertical direction accordingly.
