Abstract
PURPOSE: To detect a knocking without extraneous influences such as an engine's chaterring by detecting an ionic current.
CONSTITUTION: An ignition plug 2 and an ion probe 3 are disposed oppositely on a line passing through a center of a combustion chamber. For detecting a ionic condition, an ionic current level is inputted to a knocking distinguishing circuit. In the absence of a knocking, the ionic current shows a peak of a relatively moderate curved line in the region of the maximum burning pressure. At an occurance of the knocking, because of a momentary rise of the ionic current, the ion probe 3 exhibits a stiff peak of the current. A comparison of an output of the ion probe 3 with a preset level may detect a knocking, thereby having no extraneous influence on the detection.
