Abstract

PURPOSE:To modulate the quantity of pass light by spacing the part between both end faces of two optical fibers by a constant distance to constitute a light modulating space, and bending this space elastically or bending one of the optical fibers. CONSTITUTION:An input optical fiber 11 and an output optical fiber 12 are inserted spacially by a constant distance in a capillary tube 14, to form a modulating space (between end faces 15, 16 of both fibers) where no optical fibers exist, and this space is elastically bent, whereby the quantity of pass light is modulated. Good results are obtained if the inside wall of the tube 14 is beforehand roughened or blackened with paint. It is equally well to crush the capillary tube in place of bending the same. In lieu of forming the above-mentioned modulating space, it is also possible to modulate the quantity of pass light by removing the clads by a constant distance from the optical fibers in their axial direction, sticking a total reflection preventing material in place of these, and elastically bending these parts.
