Abstract

PURPOSE: To considerably increase the spinning speed of a fiber by regulating the fluid pressure of a coating material through which a spun fiber is passed correspondingly to the fiber spinning speed.
CONSTITUTION: The lower edge of a base material 1 for an optical fiber is melt- spun into a fiber 4 by heating in a furnace 2, and the fiber 4 is wound around a roller 11 at a constant speed. A coating vessel 7 and a dryer 12 are installed between the furnace 2 and the roller 11. The vessel 7 holds a soln. of a coating material, and the fiber 4 is passed through the vessel to coat the outside of the fiber with the coating material. The vessel 7 has a soln. feeding inlet 10 at the side wall, a fiber inlet 8 at the top and a fiber outlet 9 at the bottom. The lower part of the vessel 7 is tapered away to improve the flow of the soln. The soln. is fed to the vessel 7 from a tank 6 through a feeder 5 and the inlet 10. The feeder 5 regulates the fluid pressure of the soln. correspondingly to the spinning speed of the fiber 4. A fin is attached to the inlet 8 to prevent flowing backward due to a rise of the fluid pressure.
