Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled pure compound having a high transparency, by dissolving dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone (bisphenol-S) containing a colored substance in a solvent, decoloring the dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone with a reducing agent, and using preferably a sequestering agent.
CONSTITUTION: Dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone (hereinafter abbreviated to bisphenol- S) containing an impurity, particularly a colored substance, is dissolved in a solvent, e.g. methyl alcohol, formic acid or acetone, and the resultant solution is then decolored with a reducing agent, e.g. sodium dithionite or thiourea dioxide. In the process, a sequestering agent, e.g. nitrilotriacetic acid or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, is preferably used, and formed crystals are separated under ordinary pressure to give the aimed substance. The amount of the reducing agent is 0.1W5wt% based on the weight of the bisphenol-S, and the amount of the sequestering agent is 0.01W 1.0wt% based on the weight of the bisphenol-S.
