NEW MATERIAL:A 7-hydroxy PGE1 expressed by formula I (R is H or lower alkyl) or a nontoxic salt of the acid when R is H.
EXAMPLE: dl-2-( 1-Hydroxy-7-keto-8-oxanonyl )-3-( 3-hydroxy-1-transoctenyl )-4- hydroxycyclopentanone.
USE: A remedy and preventing agent for thrombosis, an antiulcer agent capable of reducing and controlling the ulceration of the stomach, and a remedy for hypertension having antiagglutinating action on blood platelets, antiulcer action and hypotensive action, and administered orally or rectally.
PROCESS: A 4-hydroxycyclopentenone expressed by formula II (R1 is a protecting group) is reacted with a cuprous salt and a lithium compound expressed by formula III (R2 is a protecting group) in the presence of a trialkylphosphine in an aprotic inert solvent, and the resultant reaction product is then reacted with an aldehyde of formula IV (R' is lower alkyl) in the presence of a Lewis acid. The protecting groups are then removed to give the compound expressed by formula I.
