Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve collapsing properties after pouring of a titled composition by using a novolak type resin which is obtained from the high polymer phenolic compound obtained by treating the byproduct in the production of bisphenol A and phenols. CONSTITUTION:The byproduct contg. bisphenol A obtained in the production of bisphenol A is treated at high temp. above 150 deg.C in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, whereby it is cleaved and low b.p. components are distilled and 10- 100pts.wt. high polymer phenolic compound remaining after this and 90-0 weights phenols are allowed to condense with formaldehyde in the presence of an acidic catalyst, whereby a novolak type phenolic resin is formed. A suitable amount of an aromatic carboxylic acid or its anhydride is compounded as a hardening accelerator to this novolak type phenolic resin, whereby the resin composition for shell molds is obtained.
