Abstract
PURPOSE:To make detection of high S/N possible by applying AC magnetic fields to magnetoresistive elements, modulating the magnetic recording information read out from the elements and performing synchronous detection by referring to the AC magnetic field signal at the time of demodulating this information. CONSTITUTION:An MR element 4 and an MR element 11 for reference in a head core gap are shunted of respectively the same resistance value R and are connected in series, thence voltge Vs is applied thereto. The element 11 has the same characteristics as those of the element 4 and is applied with a magnetic field by an oscillating source 12 synchronized with an oscillating source 5. The output at the connection point of the element 4 and the element 11 is put together with the modulating reference signal from the source 12 into a phase detector PSD13, by which synchronous detection is carried out. The demodulated signal is recorded 14. With such constitution, the amplitudes of the sources 5, 12 are adjusted to make the magnetic fields around both elements 4, 11 equal prior to detection of the information recorded in a medium, whereby the output of the PSD13 inputted with the output at the intermediate point thereof and the modulating reference signal is set at a constant value. Next, when the information signal on the recording medium is detected, the signal free from any noise is recorded 14 by the synchronous detection in the PSD13.
