Abstract
PURPOSE:To form a uniform base material for an optical fiber by setting a semistationary auxiliary burner at the gas introduction end of a reactin tube and operating the burner by a specified system in the manufacture of a base material for an optical fiber by an internal CVD method. CONSTITUTION:A reactive gas G is fed into a reactin tube 1 from the introduction sectin 2 in the arrow direction, and by moving a main heating burner 3 back and forth in the axial direction of the tube 1 by distance L, a glass layer 4 is formed on the inner wall of the tube 1. While the burner 3 is moved from the starting point B to the terminal 5, an auxiliary burner 8 having heating powe reduced to such a degree that the gas G is not decomposed is held at the point B (symbol 11 is a means for moving the burner 8), and while the burner 3 is returned from the terminal 5 to the point B, the heating power of the burner 8 is increased to deposit soot formed by the decomposition of the gas G on parts B-C close to the inlet of the tube 1. When the burner 3 reaches the point B, the burner 8 is pulled back to the position A.
