Abstract

PURPOSE: To inexpensively obtain a solidified carbon material having superior rupture strength at high temp. and suitable for use in the manufacture of calcium carbide by adding a mixture of Portland cement with gypsum to carbon material powder, further adding water, and agitating them.
CONSTITUTION: 15W25pts.wt. Water is added to 100pts.wt. mixture consisting of 70W90wt% carbon material powder having ≤6mm grain size such as fine coal or coke breeze and 30W10wt% binder composed of Portland cement and gypsum in 50:50W90:10wt. ratio, and they are agitated to solidify the carbon material powder. Thus, an inexpensive solidifed carbon material superior to briquetted coal obtd. by a conventional method in strength, especially rupture strength at high temp. is obtd. without using a special apparatus, and it is suitable for use as starting material for manufacturing calcium carbide.
