Abstract

PURPOSE:To protect a gate turnoff thyristor (GTO) from an overcurrent by a method wherein an overcurrent protecting thyristor is turned on by a DC reactor and an overcurrent detection, and a power inverting section is turned off. CONSTITUTION:When a short-circuit is generated at the power inverting section 2, this short-circuit current is suppressed by the DC reactor 20a, the short-circuit current is also detectd by an overcurrent detecting circuit 4, a circuit breaker 19 is broken by the operation of a controlling circuit 5 and an overcurrent protecting circuit 7, and at the same time, the short-circuit current is branched off by the turn on of overcurrent protecting thyristor 13 and the flowing in of the short-circuit current to the GTO on the power inverting section 2 is reduced. Besides, a gate turnoff signal is supplied to all the GTO's on the power inverting section 2 by the controlling circuit 5 and the power inverting section 2 is turned off. Thus, the GTO's are protected safely and securely and the miniaturized and light-weighted GTO invertor device can be obtained.
