Abstract
PURPOSE: To isomeize a xylene and convert ethylbenzene into another aromatic hydrocarbon simultaneously, by bringing the xylene containing the ethylbenzene into contact with a mordenite type zeolite containing phosphorus as a catalyst in the presence of hydrogen.
CONSTITUTION: A xylene containing ethylbenzene is converted into another aromatic hydrocarbon in the presence of hydrogen. In the process, the xylene is brought into contact with a mordenite type zeolite catalyst, containing phosphorus, and subjected to the ion exchange with hydrogen ions and/or a hydrogen ion precursor. The mordenite type zeolite may be a synthetic, natural substance or a mixture thereof. The synthetic zeolite contains sodium ions and preferably subjected to the ion exchange with calcium ions, and the addition of another rhenium component in addition to the phosphorus preferably promotes the hydrogenation and deethylation.
EFFECT: Ethylbenzene can be removed under almost no thermodynamic restriction.
