Abstract

PURPOSE: To utilize surplus rice effectively, by adding sodium silicate or diatomaceous earth to grain, subjecting the grain to dry distillation, carbonizing the grain, followed by activating the carbonized substance by two-stage process through the addition of steam and carbon dioxide gas.
CONSTITUTION: Old unpolished rice, etc. is dried, powdered, and adjusted to proper granules. Sodium silicate or diatomaceous earth is added to the rice granules, which are fed to a rotary kiln. The granules are subjected to dry distillation so that fats and oils, saccharides, amino acid, etc. are removed. The granules are put in a furnace, the temperature is kept at ≤500°C, the retention time in the furnace is made 60W90min, calcium chloride is added to the granules, and mild carbonation is carried out. At last, steam is added to the carbonized substance instantly so that it is activated, and, further, carbon dioxide gas is added to the substance to promote the activation. Preferably the activation time is 90W180min, and the activation temperature is 1,000W1,100°C.
