Abstract

PURPOSE:To make it unnecessary to set a threshold again in accordance with conditions and to use density information of picture elements effectively, by setting the dynamic range fixedly to a value which is calculated from a forecasted maximum value of the intensity of an input signal. CONSTITUTION:One-dimensional compression signals, which are generated from picture elements surrounded with an initial reference window and picture elements surrounded with the current horizontal correlation window, of n-bit one-dimensional compression signals 13A are selected by a selecting circuit 18 and are stored in storage circuits 19 and 20 and becomes a reference signal and a signal to be correlated. Contents in an address (i) and the next address of respective signals are read out by driving circuits 21 and 22 and are supplied to an operating circuit 25. All values in the address (i) are subjected to the parallel operation and are added by an adding circuit 26 to obtain a function of correlation of the product or a function of correlation of the difference in one unit picture element. This output is compared in a comparing circuit 28 to obtain a unit picture element which gives a maximum value and a minimum value.
