Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for naphthol by a simple operation in high yield, by sulfonating naphthalene wth a sulfonating agent in the presence of a specific organic solvent, recovering unreacted naphthalene in high yield, and reusing the solvent.
CONSTITUTION: Naphthalene is sulfonated with a sulfonating agent (e.g., sulfuric acid, fuming nitric acid, sufuric anhydride, etc.) to give naphthalenesulfonic acid. In the reaction, sulfonation is carried out in the presence of one or more organic solvents (e.g., methyldecalin, ethyldecalin, dimethyldecalin, etc.) selected from the group consisting of decalin, lower alkyl substituted decalin, and liquid paraffin. The solvent is insert and has no influence on sulfonation itself, capable of recovering ureacted naphthalene easily, and being used in the following sulfonation by recycling it. Usually the amount of the solvent is 0.1W5 times, preferably 0.3W2 times as much as that of naphthalene.
