Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the treating time and to enhance the productivity by changing the temp. of a medium in accordance with the composition of matrix glass in the manufacture of a refractive index distribution type lens by an ion exchange method. CONSTITUTION:Matrix glass contg. the 1st cations constituting a glass modifying oxide is brought into contact with a medium such as molten salt contg. the 2nd cations constituting a glass modifying oxide to provide a refractive index distribution changing from the surface of the glass to the interior by ion exchange. At this time, the temp. of the medium is raised or dropped in accordance with a change in the composition of the matrix glass. For example, the temp. raising or dropping speed of the medium is selected so that the average viscosity value of the glass is adjusted to 109-1011 with the progress of the ion exchange. By this method a refractive index distribution type lens can be manufactured in a short time without causing heat deformation in the matrix glass.
