Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:An antibiotic substance 76-11 having the following physico- chemical and biological properties: Elementary analysis %: C, 62.61; H, 8.27; N, 0 as the free acid. C, 60.57; H, 8.04; N, 0 as the Na salt. Molecular weight: 843 by the titration method and 873 by the FD mass spectrum method. Melting point: 108W112°C as the free acid and 210W212°C (decomposition) as the N salt. [α]D25=+36.6° (C=0.382, CHCl3). Readily soluble in benzene, acetone, etc., soluble in methanol, DMF, etc. and slightly soluble in water and hexane. Capable of aecoloring KMnO4 solution, but negative to the periodic acid-benzidine reaction and exhibiting the growth inhibitory action against Gram-positive cocci, bacilli and acid-fast germs at a concentration of 0.4mg/ml.
USE: An antimicrobial agent against Gram-positive bacteria, acid-fast germs, etc. including germs resistant to multiple drugs.
PROCESS: A strain of the genus Nocardia, e.g. Nocardia sp. 76-11 (FERM-P No. 5678), is cultivated.
