Abstract

PURPOSE:To detect exclusively sludge sticking to the surface of a body to be cleaned, securely by providing a light emitting device at one end of a transparent photoconductor and a photodetector, photodetecting AC light from the light emitting device, at the other end. CONSTITUTION:A detection part 3 is provided within a region where the cleaning operation of a cleaning device 2 cleaning the lens surface of a head lamp 1 is effective. From a light emitting diode 32 provided at one end of the detection part 3, constant-frequency AC light is emitted and conducted in a transparent photoconductor 31. The light passed throught the transparent photoconductor 31 is photodetected by a phototransistor 33 while disturbance light is included, and a filter circuit 4 discriminates between the AC component and distrubance light to output only the AC component. If sludge sticks do the transparent photoconductor 31, the amplitude of the photodetected AC light is decreased, so the sticking of the sludge is detected on the basis of a difference from the AC component set by being passed through the filter circuit 4.
