PURPOSE:To prevent an error due to disturbing light by passing a photodetection output, obtained by turning on and off a light emitting element for pulses, through a high-pass filter which turns on synchronizing with the said pulses. CONSTITUTION:The pulse output of an oscillator 1 is supplied to a light emitting element 2 and a transfer circuit (synchronous high-pass filter) 6. When a light shielding body 3 is off an optical path L, the emitted light of the light emitting element 2 enters a photodetecting element 4 and then enters the synchronous high-pass filter 6 through a preamplifier 5. The output of the filter 6 is inputted to the detecting circuit 19 consisting of a detecting and smoothing circuit (integral network) 7 and a level discriminating circuit 8 to discriminate whether the mean output value of the filter 6 has a prescribed value or not, thereby outputting the result to an output terminal 10. Consequently, the output waveform (c) of the amplifier 5 including disturbing light, after passing through the synchronous high-pass filter 6, synchronizes with a synchronizing signal (d) and changes into a waveform (e) having no low frequency component L, thus excluding an error due to disturbing light.
