Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled stable emulsion having strong affinity to fibers etc. having negatively charged surface, and useful as a textile finishing agent, by the emulsion polymerization of a vinyl monomer in the presence of a water-soluble nonionic polymer and a cation-modified guaiac gum.
CONSTITUTION: The objective emulsion is prepared by the emulsion polymerization of (A) a polymerizable vinyl monomer (e.g. vinyl acetate) in the presence of (B) a water-soluble nonionic polymer compound (e.g. polyvinyl alcohol) and (C) a cation-modified guaiac gum, at 40W100°C using a radical polymerization initiator such as azo-bis(isobutylamidine hydrochloride), etc. The component (C) is pref. the one having a nitrogen content of 1W5wt% and obtained by reacting guaiac gum of formula I with glycidyltrialkylammonium salt, etc., thereby introducing the quaternary ammonium group of formula II (R1WR3 are lower alkyl; X is univalent anion).
