CONSTITUTION:Raster scanning is performed from a plural directions for a two- dimensional picture memory 2 obtained as the result of correction performed on the inclination of input pictures by an inclination correcting circuit 3, and desity values obtained by quantizing picture elements on the scanning lines by a quantizing circuit 1 are cumulated. Then, sections where the density value cumulated result changes abruptly are detected and divided by an area dividing circuit 4, and then, the result is stored in a divided result storing memory 7. The continuous amount of picture elements which are larger than a prescribed value in the two-dimensional picture memory is detected by a field separator detecting circuit 5, and the already obtained area-divided result is corrected by an area addition dividing circuit 6 based on the detected field separator.
