Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable a mechanical deflecting means, such as a polygon mirror, to turn at a low speed by using a linearly polarized light beam as a scanning beam and by deflecting the light beam by a phase modulating means and an optocal path selecting means. CONSTITUTION:A light beam generator 12 performs linear polarization in a specific direction by using a laser which outputs a linearly polarized light beam. A polarized beam outputted by the generator 12 is made incident to the 1st deflecting means 15 as an optical path selecting means, which then selects one of optical paths digitally to scan the beam on a photoreceptor drum 11 lengthwise through a polygon mirror 13 as the 2nd mechanical polarizing means. This constitution lowers the rotational frequency of the polygon mirror to a quater that of a usual device and stability and reliability in scanning are improved very much.
