Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound, easily, in high yield, by reacting a 3- methyl-pyrazole compound derived from hydrazine with an alkylating agent such as easily available trimethyl phosphate, etc.
CONSTITUTION: A 1-alkylmethylpyrazole compound of formula III (R is alkyl), e.g. 1,3-dimethyl-5-hydroxypyrazole, is prepared by reacting a 3-methylpyrazole compound of formula I [X is H or group of formula II (Y1 and Y2 are H, halogen, nitro, or trifluoromethyl)], e.g. 3-methyl-5-hydroxypyrazole, with an alkylating agent selected from trialkyl phosphate and alkyl p-toluenesulfonate. The reaction temperature is pref. 120W170°C when the alkylating agent is trialkyl phosphate, and 70W120°C when it is alkyl p-toluenesulfonate.
