Abstract

PURPOSE: To obviate the degradation in the effect of preventing crooked running despite long-term use by forming a plasma melt-sprayed layer depositing metallic compound particles in a metallic melt-stuck layer in the central part of a roll.
CONSTITUTION: Metallic compound particles 10a of high high-temp. hardness such as WC or the like are deposited on a hearth roll 3 at about 1/5W2/3L in the central part of the effective width L thereof via a metallic melt-sprayed layer 10b of Co or the like, whereby a plasma arc melt-sprayed layer 10 having ruggedness is formed in the part corresponding to the central part of the roll. The surface roughness of said layer 10 is controlled to the roughness conforming to the passing speed of a cold rolled strip. If this hearth roll is used for annealing of the cold rolled strip, the crooked running is prevented sufficiently without any decrease in the coefft. of friction between the strip and the melt-sprayed layer.
