Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an FRP having a high curing rate, improved transparency and water resistance, by using a specific quanternary ammonium salt in curing an unsaturated polyester resin impregnated into a glass fibrous feinforcing material.
CONSTITUTION: A glass fibrous reinforcing material is impregnated with an unsaturated polyester resin (UPE), and the resin is then cured. In the process, a quaternary ammonium salt, e.g. an octylbenzyldimethylammonium halide, of the formula (X is halogen; R1 is 6W9C straight chain hydrocarbon; R2 is CH3, C2H5, etc.; R3 and R4 are CH3, C2H5 or benzyl) in an amount of 0.1W10PHR based on the UPE is mixed with the UPE. Preferably, the quaternary ammonium salt in an amount of 0.05W0.5wt% as the solid content is added to a sizing agent containing 0.05W6wt% silane coupling agent, e.g. vinylsilane, and 3W15wt% film former, e.g. vinyl acetate emulsion, and a glass fibrous reinforcing material is then sized with the sizing agent. The reinforcing material is impregnated with the UPE to cure the resin. Another component, e.g. a curing (accelerating) agent, is used if necessary.
