Abstract
PURPOSE: To treat alkaline waste water containing sulfides simply and economically by treating said water with activated sludge after sulfides contained in said water were converted into thiosulfate and/or sulfite.
CONSTITUTION: Alkaline waste water containing at least one sort of sulfide, hydrosulfide, polysulfide or the like, which is discharged from a chemical plant producing petrochemicals, rayon or the like, is pretreated as follows. That is; the sulfide, the hydrosulfide, the polysulfide or the like are converted into thiosulfate and/or sulfite containing or not containing polythionate through reacting with acid sulfite, sulfurous acid, or gaseous sulfurous acid which are selected in accordance with the sort of the material to be treated, thus a process making the waste water harmless to sludge germ is achieved. Then the waste water, which is made harmless through said process, is treated with activated sludge. Since the operation is carried out simply and without the generation of any harmful gas such as H2S or the like through this method, the counter measure for gas odor is not needed too, and, the workability and the working environment are improved.
