Abstract

PURPOSE: To accurately assemble a steering shaft, by using a jig to center the steering shaft as to a steering column when assembling the shaft.
CONSTITUTION: A steering shaft 4 including universal joint portions 4a, 4c is inserted into a steering column 3. Recesses 16 are provided on the opposite sides of the universal joint portions 4a, 4c. The portions of the column 3, which correspond to the recesses 16, are provided with holes 17 through which the pins 19, 20 of a centering jig can be inserted. The centering jig includes arms 21, 22 the distance between which can be adjusted by a screw 23. The pins 19, 20 are secured on the arms 21, 22. In assembly, the universal joint portions 4a, 4c are centered in the column 3 by the pins 19, 20 and the shaft 4 is then secured on a vehicle body.
