Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare chromium or ferrochromium without using expensive electric power by a method wherein a chromium ore is charged into a chlorination furnace to be chlorinated and a formed chloride compound is reduced.
CONSTITUTION: A particulate stock material obtained by finely dividing a chromium ore ahd coke is charged into a rotary kiln to be preheated therein and, from a charge port 3, sent into a multi-stage fixed layer type chlorination furnace 2. Into the chlorination furnace 2, cloline is blowed from a blow-in port 4 of a lower part thereof as well as said furnace is heated to 800W850°C. Therefore, Cr is chlorinated and the formed liquid CrCl2 is extracted from a secondary stage part 2b. Said liquid CrCl2 is sent to a reduction furnace 5 and metal Al 6 is aded therein as a reducing agent to reduce said CrCl2 to Cr or ferrochromium. Further, a chloride of Al, Si or the like in said chromium ore is gasified in the chlorination furnace 2 and set to a primary fractionator 9 and a secondary fractionator 10 from a discharge port 2C to be recovered.
