Abstract
PURPOSE: To shorten a period necessary for fermentation, by adding seed bacteria conditioned in the most activated state to a matter to be fermented, e.g. sewage sludge, before charging the matter into a fermentation vessel.
CONSTITUTION: A part of a matter 1 to be fermented, whose water retention, air permeability, etc. are conditioned by additive(s), is fed into a seed bacteria-cultivating vessel 2 to obtain highly active seed bacteria 3. A part of the cultivated seed bacteria is further mixed 4 with the matter 1 to be fermented and circulated into the seed bacteria-cultivating vessel 2, and another part of the seed bacteria is mixed 5 with another matter to be fermented and charged into a fermentation vessel 6. The fermentation vessel 6 is provided with milti-stage fermentation chambers along its vertical direction. The matter to be fermented is dropped and carried from the upper portion to the lower portion of the vessel 6 by successively opening and closing each stage floor. Thus, the matter to be fermented is compostized by fermenting it to a proper extent while cutting and turning it. The treated matter is discharged as a compost product 7. A part of the product is circulated, mixed with the matter to be fermented together with the seed bacteria, and used as a material to be charged into the fermentation vessel.
