Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an austenite stainless steel with superior resistances to stress corrosion cracking and crevice corrosion in environment of low concn. chloride by adding Cu to prevent stress corrosion cracking and by adding Mo to provide further enhanced crevice corrosion resistance.
CONSTITUTION: This steel consists of, by wt., ≤0.08% C, ≤1.0% S, ≤2.0% Mn, 6.0W20.0% Ni, 16.0W25.0% Cr, 0.5W3.0% Cu, 0.5W1.2% Mo and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. Cu is remarkably effective in improving the stress corrosion cracking resistance of such a Cr-Ni austenite stainless steel to a salt soln. having a low salt concn. such as ≤3.5% corresponding to the salt concn. of seawater. The lower limit of Cu is decided to produce the effect, and the upper limit is decided from the economical viewpoint. Mo is effective in improving the crevice corrosion resistance. Above the lower limit of Mo is required, and the upper limit is decided in consideration of economical efficiency because of low corrosion resistance in environment of fresh water. The addition of Ti, Nb and Zr is more effective to attain the purpose.
