Abstract

PURPOSE:To achieve high-density recording by eliminating the need for a guard band between tracks by forming recording tracks, differing in azimuth slanting angle, alternately in a tape width direction by using two recording and reproducing heads differing in azimuth slanting angle. CONSTITUTION:Recording and reproducing heads 12 and 13 differing in azimuth slanting angle constitute a fixed head mechanism. Each time an endless tape 11 makes one round, the specific position of the tape 11 is detected by a control circuit 24 through a mark detecting means, etc., to turn a pulse motor 21 while exercising control over a motor driving circuit 25, thereby running a head 12 stepwise in the width derection of the tape at a pitch P about twice the track width. Thus, tracks 1-M are formed on the tape 11. After a scan on the M, the motor 21 is reversed to make a head 13 correspond to a position between tracks 1 and 2, thereby forming tracks (M+1)-N. Consequently, tracks differing in azimuth slanting angle are formed closely by turns and guard bands between tracks are made unnesessary to achieve high-density recording.
