Abstract

PURPOSE:To detect a track error securely by providing a photodetecting element between a disk and a prism having a reflecting surface nearly at a critical angle to the optical axis of reflected light from the disk while detecting a focus error by causing the reflected light to strike the prism. CONSTITUTION:Reflected light from a disk 26 is condensed by an objective 25 to pass through a quarter-wavelength plate 24. Between the 1st polarizing prism 23 and quarter-wavelength plate 24, and 2nd small polarizing prism 29 is arranged. Luminous flux reflected by the 1st polarizing prism 23 is incident to a detection prism 27 having the reflecting surface 27a set nearly at a critical angle and its reflected light is caused to strike the 1st photodetector 28 having two split photodetection areas 28A and 28B. Luminous flux in the vicinity of the optical axis which is reflected by the 2nd polarizing prism 29 is photodetected by the 2nd photodetector 30 having four split photodetection areas 30A-30D.
