Abstract

PURPOSE: In the production of active carbon from coal, the depolymerization product of coal is used as a raw material to be formed, made nonfusible, carbonized and activated to enable the melt formation and produce the high-quality coal active carbon with reduced fluctuation in properties.
CONSTITUTION: Coal such as bituminous or brown coal is crushed, mixed with a hydrocarbon solvent such as the medium fraction of coal tar oil and dissolved with heat under pressurized hydrogen. The coal depolymerization product resulting from partial hydrogenolysis becomes thermally unstable, when the reaction is insufficient and causes difficulty in uniform dissolution to expand the fluctuation in the particle and shape size. When the reaction goes excessively, the activation requires a long time. Therefore O/C of the depolymerization product is adjusted to about 0.01W 0.07. Further, the softening point is made to 160W250°C to facilitate the process for making formed product nonfusible. Since the depolymerization product melts uniformly, it can be made into balls at the melting state. The formed product is made nonfusible by air oxidation and subjected to carbonization and activation and they may be effected simultaneously.
