Abstract

PURPOSE: The reaction of phosphorus pentachloride with ammonium chloride is effected in a specific organic solvent in the presence of a specific catalyst and the product is dissolved in a specific solvent and brought into contact with water at a specified temperature to produce cyclic phosphonitrile chloride oligomers with excellent properties.
CONSTITUTION: In an organic solvent inert to chlorination such as tetrachloroethane, the reaction between phosphorus pentachloride and ammonium chloride is conducted in the presence of at least one of divalent chlorides such as beryllium chloride or magnesium chloride. The amount of ammonium chloride used in the reaction is about 1W1.5mol per mole of phosphorus pentachloride and that of the catalyst is about 1W10-5mol. The reaction temperature is 100W200°C. After the solvent is distilled off from the reaction mixture, the residue is dissolved in at least one selected from aliphatic hydrocarbon such as petroleum ether and ethers such as dibutyl ether and brought into contact with water at about 40W100°C. Then, the cyclic phosphonitrile chloride oligomers mainly consisting of trimers and tetramers are collected from the organic layer.
