Abstract
PURPOSE:To increase the operational voltage at low temperature by using a negative electrode made of lithium, and adding a given amount of a mercury salt to the electrolyte. CONSTITUTION:A battery includes lithium used as a negative electrode 3, and an electrolyte containing 0.5-5.0wt% of mercurous chloride, mercuric chloride, mercurous nitrate, mercuric nitrate or the like. The amount of such a compound contained in the electrolyte perferably is 0.175-1.75mg per unit surface area of the former lithium. The electrolyte, which may be a usually used one, is preferred to be prepared by dissolving perchlorate and lithium borofluoride in propylene carbonate, 1,2-dimethoxyethane, tetrahydrofuran, gamma-butyfolactone, or a mixture solvent consisting of some of these solvent. A positive electrode 5 for the battery is made of manganese dioxide, iron sulfide, copper sulfide, copper oxide, carbon fluoride, silver chromate or the like. Since amalgamation of the former lithium enables the mainteance of the surface activity, any decrease in the operational voltage caused at low temperature can be prevented. Besides, unusually high voltage seen at the initial discharge stage of a battery constituted by using a positive electrode made of manganese dioxide, can be removed.
